Short answer. Most Shopify brands should run Performance Max or Standard Shopping for product traffic, a separate branded Search campaign, and a small non-brand Search campaign for the handful of terms that actually convert. Your product feed decides more of your results than your bids do. For context, the median Google Ads ROAS across 21,000+ Triple Whale brands is 3.27, well above Meta's 1.88.
Google is where people go when they already want the thing. That makes it the best demand capture channel a Shopify store has. It also makes it easy to waste money, because an unchecked account will happily spend your budget selling to people who were going to buy anyway. At Slice of the Pie, that is the first leak we look for in a Shopify account.

Should a Shopify brand use Performance Max, Standard Shopping or Search?
Usually all three, each with a narrow job. Performance Max or Shopping sells products, Search protects the brand and captures a few high intent terms.

| Campaign type | Best at | Weak spot | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Performance Max | Reach across Shopping, Search, YouTube, Display, Gmail and Discover from one feed | Will take credit for brand searches and retargeting unless you fence it in | You have clean conversion data and at least a few hundred dollars a day |
| Standard Shopping | Control. Product level bids, full search terms, clean reporting | Shopping inventory only, more manual work | Tight budgets, testing, or you want to see exactly what you are buying |
| Branded Search | Cheap, high intent clicks on your own name | Most of those buyers would have found you anyway | Competitors bid on your name, or you need to control the message |
| Non-brand Search | Category terms like "organic caramel gift box" with clear buying intent | Expensive clicks, easy to overspend | You know which terms convert from Shopping or PMax search term data |
One change from late 2024 matters here. Google used to automatically give Performance Max priority over Standard Shopping when both targeted the same products. Starting in October 2024, Google switched to "highest ad rank serves," the same rule every other campaign type follows. That means you can run Standard Shopping next to PMax on purpose, for testing or for control over your best sellers, without PMax swallowing it.
PMax also got much less of a black box in 2025. Google added full search terms reporting, channel level reporting that shows how the campaign split its delivery across Google's inventory, and campaign level negative keywords up to 10,000 per campaign. Note that those negatives apply to Search and Shopping inventory, not YouTube or Display. Use the new reports. If you cannot see where the money went, you cannot defend it.
Google says advertisers who adopt Performance Max see an average of 27% more conversions or value at a similar CPA or ROAS. That is Google's number about Google's product. Sometimes it holds. Sometimes most of that lift is your own brand traffic getting relabeled. The next two sections are how you tell the difference.
Why does product feed quality matter so much for Google Shopping?
Because in Shopping there are no keywords. Your feed is your keywords.
When someone searches "women's merino wool hiking socks," Google decides whether to show your product mostly by reading your product title, description, category and attributes. A title that says "The Trailblazer" tells Google nothing. A title that says "Women's Merino Wool Hiking Socks, Cushioned, 3 Pack" matches the search and tells the shopper what they are looking at.
Google Merchant Center allows titles up to 150 characters, but Google's own help docs say shoppers usually notice only the first 70 or fewer depending on screen size, and tell you to put the most important details first. So lead with what the product is, then the attribute people search for, then brand if your brand is not yet known.
The feed fixes we make on almost every new Shopify account:
- Rewrite titles on the top sellers. Product type, key attribute, size or count. Not your internal product name.
- Clear disapprovals weekly. Every disapproved product is a product that cannot sell on Google. Merchant Center now has a priority fixes tab that shows the potential click uplift of each issue.
- Fill GTINs, brand, color, size and material. Missing attributes mean missed matches.
- Add custom labels. Tag products by margin, best seller status and season so you can bid harder on what actually makes money.
- Use real images. Clean main image, then lifestyle images as additional images.
Shopify's Google and YouTube app will sync your catalog to Merchant Center, and that is a fine starting point. It is not the end. The app sends what is in Shopify, and most Shopify product titles were written for the product page, not for a search result.
Should a Shopify brand bid on its own brand name?
Usually yes, in its own Search campaign, and keep brand out of Performance Max so it cannot inflate PMax's numbers.
Branded clicks are cheap and convert at a very high rate. If competitors or resellers bid on your name, you need to be there. But branded traffic makes any campaign look amazing, and PMax will happily scoop it up if you let it. A PMax campaign reporting 8x ROAS might be doing 3x on new shoppers and 20x on people who typed your name.
The fix is simple. Run brand in its own Search campaign where you can see it. Add brand exclusions to Performance Max. Then judge PMax on what is left. If you are not sure branded ads are worth paying for at all, pause them in one region for a few weeks and watch total branded revenue, not just ad revenue. That test answers the question better than any opinion.
How should a Shopify brand split its Google Ads budget?
Most of it on products, a small fixed slice on brand, and non-brand Search only where data says it works.

| Monthly Google spend | Setup we usually start with |
|---|---|
| Under $3,000 | One Standard Shopping or one PMax campaign on best sellers, plus brand Search. Nothing else. |
| $3,000 to $15,000 | PMax on the full catalog with brand excluded, about 10% on brand Search, Standard Shopping for hero products if you want control. |
| $15,000 to $50,000 | PMax split by margin or product group using custom labels, brand Search, non-brand Search on proven terms, Shopping tests alongside. |
| $50,000+ | All of the above plus YouTube and Demand Gen for demand creation, measured against blended MER. |
Our starting setups, not a Google recommendation. We change them once real account data comes in.
Two rules keep budget from leaking. First, do not switch to Target ROAS too early. Google's help center lists a minimum of 15 conversions in the past 30 days for Target ROAS on Search and Shopping. Below that, start on Maximize Conversion Value and let the campaign collect data. Second, split campaigns only when the split changes a decision. A separate campaign for a 70% margin product and a 20% margin product makes sense. Separate campaigns for every collection usually just starves each one.
What ROAS should a Shopify brand expect from Google Ads?
It depends on category and margin, but Google typically runs higher ROAS than Meta because it captures existing demand.

The same data shows Google ROAS slipping about 3.5% year over year while CPA rose almost 10%, so if your account got a little more expensive this year, you have company. And like every platform number, these are Google's view of Google's contribution. Judge the business on blended MER. Our MER calculator takes about ten seconds.
What it looks like when the pieces work together: for The Caramel Tree, a small batch caramel brand on Shopify, search (SEO plus Google Ads) became the largest share of revenue, and total revenue grew 47.5% over twelve months versus the prior twelve. Google's job there was to capture shoppers already looking for gourmet caramel and gifts, while Meta found new ones. The full story is in the Caramel Tree case study. On a different account, clean beauty brand NUDE Envie, Google Ads ran at 2.87x ROAS from February to July 2026 alongside the Meta rebuild in the NUDE Envie case study.
What should you fix first in a Shopify Google Ads account?
Tracking, then the feed, then brand leakage. In that order.
- Check conversion tracking. One purchase conversion counted once, with real order value. Duplicate purchase tags are the most common thing we find, and they make every ROAS number fiction.
- Clear Merchant Center. Fix disapprovals and warnings. Open the priority fixes tab.
- Rewrite your top 25 titles. What it is, the attribute people search, size or count.
- Split brand out. Brand in its own Search campaign, brand exclusions on PMax.
- Read the search terms. PMax and Shopping both have them now. Add negatives for junk.
- Then scale. Raise budgets on the campaign groups beating target, not the account as a whole.
This is the core of our Google Ads management for e-commerce. Inside the Slice of the Pie Ecommerce package we run Google Search, Shopping and Performance Max next to Meta, clear Merchant Center disapprovals weekly and rewrite feed titles on your top 25 SKUs every month, for 3,000 dollars a month. We work with brands nationwide and cap the roster at 30 clients. If your store gets traffic but not sales, fix the site first with our Shopify conversion checklist or Shopify CRO, because Google cannot fix a product page that does not convert.

FAQ: Google Ads for Shopify brands
Is Performance Max better than Standard Shopping for Shopify stores?
Not automatically. Performance Max reaches more inventory from one feed, while Standard Shopping gives you product level control and cleaner reporting. Since October 2024, Performance Max no longer gets automatic priority over Standard Shopping on the same products, so the campaign with the highest ad rank serves. Many brands run PMax on the catalog and Standard Shopping on hero products or tests.
How do I stop Performance Max from taking credit for brand searches?
Put your branded keywords in a separate Search campaign and add brand exclusions to your Performance Max campaigns. Then judge Performance Max only on the non-brand results that are left. Branded traffic converts so well that it can make a weak PMax campaign look great.
What makes a good Google Shopping product title?
Lead with what the product is and the attribute people search for, then size, count or material, then brand if your brand is not well known. Google Merchant Center allows up to 150 characters, but Google says shoppers usually notice only the first 70 or fewer depending on screen size, so put the most important details first.
How should a Shopify brand split its Google Ads budget?
Put most of the budget on product campaigns, Performance Max or Standard Shopping, keep a small fixed slice, often around 10 percent, on branded Search, and add non-brand Search only for terms your search term data proves convert. Under about 3,000 dollars a month, keep it to one product campaign plus brand Search.
What is a good Google Ads ROAS for e-commerce?
Anything above your break even, which is 1 divided by your contribution margin. For context, Triple Whale data on 21,000+ brands from August 2025 to July 2026 shows a median Google Ads ROAS of 3.27, with sports and outdoors at 4.35, apparel at 3.99, beauty at 2.81 and health and wellness at 2.06.
When should I switch a Shopping campaign to Target ROAS?
Google lists a minimum of 15 conversions in the past 30 days for Target ROAS on Search and Shopping campaigns, and every conversion needs a value above zero. Before that, run Maximize Conversion Value and let the campaign gather data.
